Hares’ Gap, Mourne Mountains

The top image was captured in the mid-90s on black and white film using a Canon EOS 620 and Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 lens, an impressive combination. The bottom image was shot 20 years later on a Fujifilm X-T1. The Fujinon 55-200mm lens at 200mm is disappointing here. It’s unacceptably soft at the far left edge of the frame. Others have noticed this too.

The optimum aperture for this lens is probably around f6. But this ISO 400 handheld shot needed f4.8, the widest aperture possible at 200mm, to avoid camera shake on a bright, calm day on the slopes of Slievelamagan. A tripod and a mid-aperture setting may have given me sharper results across the frame.
